In the state of Vermont, patients are allowed direct access to physical therapy. This means that legally you can go to physical therapy without a referral from your physician. However, roughly 50% of insurance carriers require that you obtain a physicians referral prior to attending PT. You can call your insurance company, or look on your card to see if you are entitled to direct access. Medicare and Medicaid (VHAP) are among the carriers that require a written order from your physician. You can also call our office and we will assist you in finding out what your insurance company requires.
